Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, 56, is the newly-appointed Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco and was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, San Diego police reported. Salvatore Cordileone was detained by San Diego police early Saturday morning after being stopped by police at a DUI checkpoint near San Diego State University campus. Rev. Salvatore Cordileone is a strong supporter of California’s same-sex marriage ban and currently serves as the bishop of Oakland since 2009. Earlier this year Pope Benedict XVI selected Rev. Cordileone to replace Archbishop George Niederauer’s who will retire in October.
Rev. Salvatore Cordileone is a San Diego native where he was raised and ordained as a priest in 1982. Cordileone played a significant role in the statewide network of clergy that endorsed Proposition 8, which was an initiative to strip same-sex couples of the right to wed in California. Cordileone also served as an assistant at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura for seven years in Rome. The Supreme Tribunal of the Spostolic Signatura is the highest judicial body at the Vatican.
